What it takes to be a craftsman ?
Craftsmanship has been assumed as a low level of work devoid of the need of having a skill to be a craftsperson . Learning to be a problem solver ; facing up with the technicalities ; repairing the existing things needs a great level of intellect .
Craftsmanship is basically a journey of learning , the never-ending possibilities of learning about your trade . Craftsmanship is not just wood carving , weaving or doing things with hands , craftsmanship is pervasive - It is creating a building , designing a studio or experimenting in the scientific laboratories - craftsmanship is almost everywhere
Learning from the craftsman
With the rise of the internet with the sense that we are global ; also with the sense that these large corporations have become so complicated that we have no way of even understanding the operations ; due to all of these there is a tremendous emotional dive back to the immediate , back to the specific , back to the physical . While Crafting allows the person to be autonomist - oversee a person to see the project from the beginning to the end , creates a sense of place in a place that is making us placeless - making the person skillful - or expert in his/her trade .
Craftsmanship vs Capitalism
In todays world of capitalism , it seems like jobs are more fragmented than ever have been before , so you have interns you have part time employment , you have people skipping from one industry to other all the time , good thing about is that you get to experience much more of life but what you don’t get is a sense of relief or place with what you are doing and so I think craft act as a counter part to this capitalist world
To be skilled
People don’t have the opportunity to understand what it is to be skilled , in a deep way . They have some sample experience of all of these , but they don’t know what it means to acquire mastery . It is about understanding that one must dedicate themselves or even sacrifice themselves to the acquisition of the skill , however long it takes .
